Join the Book Pass on 26 January, 2019

Come join us on January 26, 2019 to celebrate the grand opening of the new Mission Hills-Hillcrest/Knox Library and take part in one of the biggest “Book Passes” on record.  We will line streets from the current library to the new location to pass along select books as part of a grand opening party.  Each book passer will receive a free scarf and other promotional items to commemorate this historic day.  The Book Pass will take place from 9 to 10 am.  Registration will be at the new library, 215 West Washington Street.  Parking will be limited, so please plan to walk, use ride share or public transportation if possible.  Limited parking will be available first come, first served at Florence Elementary.  Please provide your email address so we may send you updates on the Book Pass.

The Mission Hills-Hillcrest/Knox Library is a stunning Craftsman-style building in the tradition of Mission Hills architecture and design.  Some four times larger than the current Mission Hills Library, the building will include a children’s area akin to the Hobbit houses as seen in the “Lord of the Rings.”

Bookstore Volunteers Needed!

When the new Branch opens in mid-January, the Friends of MH-Hillcrest Branch Library will be operating a bookstore that will sell donations made to the Library.  We are in need of volunteers to staff the Bookstore so that it can be open as many hours as possible during the week.

Our initials plans are to be open:

  1. Monday, Thursday and Friday from 10 - 3

  2. Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 1 - 6

  3. Saturday from 10 - 4

Volunteers will work in two or three hour shifts.  We hope that we will have community members who are willing to work on a regular basis, but we welcome volunteers who can work some staggered shifts based on their schedules and our scheduling needs.

We would like to develop schedules on a three month basis, so now we are looking for those who are willing to make a commitment to staff the store starting when we open in mid-to-late January 2019 through April 2019.

Volunteers will be in charge of book sales during their shifts and when not busy with sales, they will shelve new donations, remove books that have been on the shelves too long and generally keep the store tidy.  Ample training will be provided!  If a volunteer is interested, he or she might also be cross-trained to do other tasks related to book sales.

If you would like to volunteer, please send an email with your contact information to  The volunteer coordinator will contact you to discuss scheduling options.
