Friends of the Mission Hills-Hillcrest/ Knox Library
July 3, 2019
The meeting was held in the meeting room at the Mission Hills-Hillcrest/Knox Library. The meeting was called to order at 6:30 P.M. by Phyllis Marion, President.
Attendance: Phyllis Marion, Michele Pieters, Robin Baker, Alan Sparks, Don Rudesill, Nancy Carol Carter, Christine Workman, Al Hoefer, Elaine Kalin, Mary Rose Mueller, Gina Bravo (Branch Manager), Charlie Goldberg (SDPLF)
Minutes: The June Minutes were delayed and will be available at the September meeting.
Financial Report: Don Rudesill, Treasurer, presented the financial report for June 2019, with preliminary figures for the 2018/19 fiscal year. Our income in June from the Bookstore was $1,599; our income from Amazon was $377.46.
SDPL Foundation: Charlie Goldberg reported on behalf of the Foundation. Engraving of the donor bricks will begin on Sunday, June 28 and may take several Sundays to complete. Work is being done on Sunday in order to minimize disruption in the Library, particularly because of the amount of dust resulting from the engraving. The donor tiles will be followed by the wall recognitions and naming plaques.
The San Ysidro Branch will open on September 7, featuring a book parade.
Our new branch has been nominated for an Orchid Award. Charlie urged everyone to www.OrchidsandOnions.org to support the nomination.
He announced that Jim and Mary Dawe have made a donation to name the Teen Space in memory of their son. There are still other naming opportunities available, including benches.
Membership: Nancy Carol Carter reported that we have two new life members and one new senior member.
Website: Al Hoefer has set up a link to the Orchid Awards website.
Corporate Meeting: Phyllis Marion reported on the June Corporate meeting. The Corporate Board and the President’s Advisory Committee discussed revision of the chapter bylaws template and the Friends involvement in Pride weekend activities. The Friends will have a booth at the festival on both Saturday and Sunday. The Board authorized an expenditure of up to $5000 to upgrade the fencing and gate at the Friends office and book sale facility at UH. There was discussion of plans for the Friends annual meeting in September and a report of the nominations committee. There are ongoing discussions with a local dance group to participate in a grant application that would lead to dance presentations at various branches.
Programs: A Motion to approve $100 for volunteer meeting expense was seconded and approved.
Branch Manager: June circulation was 12,279 items. The Library has reorganized the Supervising Librarians to coordinate with the City Council Districts. Our new Supervising Librarian is Jennifer Jenkins. The Mobile Technology lab is coming soon. There are new restrictions on the dumpsters that allow them only to be ½ filled (because of weight issues from books, etc.) This will require adjustments by the Bookstore processors. The summer Reading Program is running smoothly. There will be two new Library card designs available this summer: Pride (July 12) and Comic Con (July 18). The Library is once again having the Find Waldo contest at all the branches. The new paperbacks for the children’s area have arrived.
President’s report: Our corporate dues are now due. Chapters have been asked to contribute toward the corporate insurance policy (which covers all chapters). The amount requested is $50 for smaller chapters; $100 for larger chapters. There was a motion and second to donate $100. It was approved.
Old Business: A motion was made to donate $1 for each book read during the Summer Reading Program (up to $5,000), seconded and approved.
New Business: Gina will look into the possibility of the Friends being able to contribute to insulation around the hand dryers in the restroom in order to eliminate noise in the Community Room.
Next Meeting: There is no meeting in August. Our next meeting is Sept. 4, 2019.
