Friends of the Mission Hills/Hillcrest Library

August 26, 2023

The meeting was held in conference rooms at the Mission Hills/Hillcrest Harley and Bessie Knox Library. The meeting was called to order at 10:00 A.M. by Anne Box, President. An attendance list is at the end of the minutes.

Minutes: The minutes of the July 15, 2023, were approved as submitted.

Financials: Don Rudesill presented the July 2023 results. Our bookstore sales were $884.38 in cash, $673.65 Square credit card, $1050.91 Amazon, $339.01 Abe, and $52.00 book cart and donations. Sales for the month were $2990.95. There was one membership of $10.00 and $279.61 interest income. Total income for the month was $3,280.76.

Our total expenses were $613.61. Advertising in the local papers was $250.00, postage for Abe and Amazon $119.99, programs $315.77.

Our total in all accounts is $154,476.23.

After discussion, we decided to wait one month to purchase another CD. Interest rates may rise again in September.

Don said that the unexplained debit of $415.05 from one account was returned by the bank.

Librarian’s report: Steve Wheeler provided matching funds balances as of July 20, 2023. Materials fund has $6,195.51, Equipment and Supplies $3,759.95, Performers and Contracts $1,500.00 and the unmatched Trust Fund $10,466.93.

Expenses were mainly for performers.

Steve requested $100.00 for supplies for a children’s rock craft event. We approved the request.

Steve said that upcoming performers include: Adrienne Nims on Monday, August 28 at 6:30 P.M.

Brushstrokes and Bookworms on Monday, August 28 from 1 to 2:30 P.M.

Jesus Cervantes violin concert on Tuesday, August 29 at noon

Bill Nims and Richard Lederer on Saturday, September 9 at 2:30 P.M.

Write Your Heart Out on Tuesday, September 11, from 10 to 11:30 A.M.

Legacies of the Past Tuesday, on September 11, at 6:30 P.M. (a rescheduled event)

Making a Terra Cotta Earth Garden on Saturday, September 16, probably at 2:30 P.M.

A children’s event on preparing for disasters, Saturday, September 30 at 2:30 P.M.

Bookstore: We were listed as one of the best-selling used bookstores in San Diego on the website “SD Today.”

Holly Murten said that she and Susan Chenven weeded our Amazon inventory of items that had been listed for a long time but had not sold. The books were then priced and shelved in the bookstore. Books listed on Abe will be checked next. Holly also said that autographed books will be moved to Abe where they may have a better market.

Sue Eubanks reminded us to request supplies now. She will be unavailable after mid- September for a month.

The bar code scanners Chuck Leib installed are working well. Again, our thanks to Chuck.

Membership: No report. Chuck was not in attendance. We had one new membership of $10.00 shown in the financial report.

Newspaper ads: Elaine Kalin said that she and Mary Rose Mueller are working on a one-year advertisement. Once approved, it will run for $199.00 per month in the “Uptown News.” The “Presidio Sentinel” is on hiatus, so future advertising is uncertain.

Elaine suggested reorganizing our website to feature the bookstore.

Website: Al Hoefer said that everything is up to date on the website.  

Roundtable: Holly said that the ALA will hold its convention in San Diego next summer. We should discuss participation and support soon. Steve said that he will see what is proposed as of now. Anne will put it on the agenda for the next meeting.

The next meeting will be Saturday, September 23rd at 10:00 A.M. The following meeting will be Saturday, October 21st, also at 10:00 A.M.
