October 21, 2023

The meeting was held in conference rooms at the Mission Hills/Hillcrest Harley and Bessie Knox Library. The meeting was called to order at 10:04 by Anne Box, President. An attendance list is at the end of the minutes.

Minutes: The minutes of the September 22, 2023, meeting were approved as submitted.

Financials: Don Rudesill reviewed the financial results from September. Bookstore sales were $816.35, Square credit card sales $$845.53, Amazon sales $594.78, Abe sales $60.57, book cart and donations $72.40. Interest income from all accounts was $338.60. For the first time, credit card sales exceeded cash sales.

Expenses included $449.00 for advertising in local newspapers, $276.91 for children’s programs, $275.00 for general programs, and $93.28 for adult programs.

Our balance in accounts and CDs at the end of September was $157,869.34.

Don Rudesill and Anne Box reported that they had closed our money market account at Mission Federal Savings and opened a new CD for 13 months at 4.35 percent. They also put $3,993.49 into a special savings account at 2.25 percent at Mission Fed. They will move $10,000.00 from our account at Mission Fed that accepts our Square and Abe and coinage to the special savings account.

Librarian’s report: Steve Wheeler provided fund balances. The Materials fund has $15,944.29, Equipment and Supplies $3,479.98, Contracts and Performers $775.00, Library Pool Distribution $5,959.37, The unmatched Trust fund has $10,466.93. The Pool Distribution fund is money from contributions that is prorated among branches.

Expenses during September included those for performers. A new dye sublimation printer was $1,714.00. Other expenses were for supplies.

Steve requested $2,000.00 for equipment, $1,000.00 for performers. A future expense will be for cupcake decorating in December. The amount was not yet available.

Steve reported that 145 people were at the branch to view the eclipse in October. Viewing glasses had been distributed in the branch and more were given out at the viewing.

A new program will be memory screening the first Monday of each month from 1 to 3 P.M. for those 55 and over. Sharp Neurocognitive Research Center will do the screening. Advance registration with library staff is required.

Future programs include: Bird Migration on Saturday, October 28 at 2:30 P.M. presented by Oasis.

An Art Reception to meet local artist Christy Ross October 28 at noon.

A concert by Nico Hueso, Songs of the Autumn Season, Tuesday, October 31 at noon. This is an enrichment program designed for seniors by Villa Musica.

Dia de los Muertos Catrina Doll and Other Crafts Wednesday, November 1 from 3 to 5 P.M.

Story Time and Craft! Wednesday, November 1 from 10 to 11 A.M. This is a children’s program.

Rudy Shappee will present A Pilgrim Odyssey From Holland to a New World on Saturday, November 18 at 2:30 P.M.

Author Talk by Diane Nares. The author discusses her new book on Saturday, November 18 at 4:00 P.M.

Anne asked Steve for a box in the back room for discarded library books that we can take to the little libraries throughout the neighborhoods. Steve will provide a box.

We agreed to put an envelope in the bookstore for donations for a memorial to Jaymee Tapacio. Steve explained that she had been part of the staff at the branch and died recently.

Bookstore: Jean Stein reported that all shifts are covered. We also agreed on a minimum age of 18 for volunteers in the bookstore.

In answer to a question, Anne said that Corporate has not finalized a volunteer agreement yet.

Kim McDaniel reported that all is well on Amazon and Abe. She has shipped the orders. Our thanks to Kim for taking care of this while Holly and Susan are unavailable.

We have received two more coupons from our newspaper ads. Elaine has run the ads again for the upcoming month.

Website: Al Hoefer said that everything is current on our website.

Membership: Chuck Leib said that we have not had any new members recently. We agreed to insert membership envelopes into books when we make a sale in the bookstore. We have the envelopes in stock.

The meeting was adjourned at 11:10 A.M.

The next meeting is scheduled for November 18th.
