Friends of the Mission Hills/Hillcrest Library

September 22, 2023

The meeting was held in conference rooms at the Mission Hills/Hillcrest Harley and Bessie Knox Library. The meeting was called to order at 10:04 A.M. by Anne Box, President. An attendance list is at the end of the minutes.

Minutes: The minutes of the August 26, 2023, meeting were approved as submitted.

Financials: Don Rudesill presented the August, 2023, results. Bookstore sales were $1,171.00 in cash, $747.24 Square credit card sales, $1,212.76 Amazon sales, $68.44 Abe sales, and $44.41 book cart sales and donations. We accrued $321.44 in interest. Total income for the month was $3,565.29.

Expenses included $500.00 for newspaper advertising and articles and $522.26 for programs. Our total expenses were $1,140.08.

Our total in accounts and CDs at the end of August was $156,833.40.

We agreed with Don to keep most of our accounts at Mission Federal Savings and U.S. Bank. After the meeting, Don and Anne will go to Mission Fed to see if we can transfer money market funds to a high yield savings account.

Librarian’s report: Steve Wheeler gave fund balances: The Materials fund has $15,944.29, Equipment and Supplies $3,693.57, Contracts and Performers $5,275.00. The unmatched Trust fund has $10,466.93.

Monthly expenses during August were for performers.

Upcoming performers and programs include: Frida Kahlo’s Art today at 2:30 P.M.

Flute Duet Concert Tuesday, September 26, at noon.

Loteria Heritage Thursday, September 28, 3:30 to 5:00 P.M.

Prepare for Fires and Other Disasters, a program for children, Saturday, September 30 at 2:30 P.M.

Brain Health and Dementia, Monday, October 2, 2:00 P.M.

Banned Books Bingo, Monday, October 2, 6:30 P.M.

Bird Migration, presented by Oasis, Saturday, October 28. Time TBA.

Steve requested a total of up to $500.00 for Halloween supplies and pumpkins. We approved this request.

Corporate: Anne Box said that Corporate Friends now has volunteer guidelines and will look at our proposed guidelines before finalizing theirs. When they are finalized, all volunteers will be asked to read and sign them.

Anne also reported that each branch now has a Corporate liaison for questions.

Bookstore: Susan Chenven said that she and Holly Murten have finished the inventory of Amazon books and have removed or lowered the price of those that were posted for a long time that did not sell. Removed books were priced to sell in the bookstore. Susan added that she and Holly will inventory Abe listings next.

In answer to a question, Susan said that some of our sets of reference books were taken by Central for their posting. They have the ability to pack and ship large sets, we do not.

Mary Rose Mueller reported that the Presidio Sentinel will resume printing in October, so we will advertise in it as well as in the Uptown News. One coupon from the Uptown News was redeemed in the bookstore.

Pat Littell said that everything in the bookstore was running smoothly. Jean Stein reported the same by email.

Website: Al Hoefer said that all is well with the website.

Membership: No report. Chuck Leib was not in attendance.

Roundtable: Steve reported that the library system will pay for one day for interested employees at the ALA conference in San Diego next year. We could pay for additional days if needed.

The next meeting will be on Saturday, October 21st at 10:00 A.M.
