Minutes of the Friends of the Mission Hills-Hillcrest/ Knox Library
November 19, 2022
The meeting was held in the meeting room at the Mission Hills/Hillcrest Harley and Bessie Knox Library. The meeting was called to order at 10:02 A.M. by Anne Box, President. An attendance list is at the end of the minutes.
Minutes: The minutes of the October meeting were approved with one correction.
Financials: Don Rudesill presented complete September and October financial reports.
September results included $849.99 bookstore cash sales, $588.84 Square sales, $998.67 Amazon sales, $69.00 book cart/donations, and $12.97 in Abe Book sales. Including donations and interest, total income was $2.518.48. Expenses in September included Amazon and Abe fees and postage of $92.99, computer and website expenses of $136.71, non-matching funds for programs of $1,141.45 and expenses for volunteer appreciation luncheon of $647.92. Total expenses were $1,994.07. The total in all accounts was $166,681.94 at the end of September.
October results included $1.160.57 bookstore cash sales, $593.22 Square sales, $565.20 Amazon sales, $59.02 book cart/donations, $86.50 Abe Book sales. Including a donation of $800.00, total income was $3,268.92. Expenses in October included Amazon and Abe fees and postage of $133.49, computer and website fees of $289.00, and donations to Matching Funds totaling $13,000.00. Non-matching funds gifts for programs and maintenance totaled $661.86. Total expenses were $14,084.35. The large donation to Matching Funds was for books and equipment for the branch. The total in all accounts was $155,856.31 at the end of October.
Librarian’s report: Steve Wheeler was not in attendance. Sue Eubanks presented a request he made by email. Steve requested $160.00 for cupcakes and $100.00 for holiday decoration expenses. Both were approved. Steve also reminded us that Richard Lederer would be speaking later today at 2:30 P.M.
Bookstore: Holly Murten said that one box of children’s books was donated to the Children’s librarian at the branch, another box was donated to The Assistance League to be given to needy military families. We have five or six more boxes for the bookstore. In answer to a question by Sue Eubanks, Holly said that this is not an ongoing donation to the Assistance League.
Sue Eubanks said that she is leaving her bookstore shift at the end of the year, but she will continue to do reports and the signage. It is her work that keeps us organized and helps to make our store look professional. Sue’s Friday afternoon shift will be available to another volunteer.
Website: Al Hoefer said he has been working with Steve to post events at the branch. He has also been working on the table of contents of the site. Square payments are now allowed on the site for donors and members.
Membership: Chuck Leib said that Square is now able to be used for memberships. He sent a letter to remind members to pay their annual dues. He also sent letters to Lifetime members and received $100.00 via Square. Chuck said that he has been using a network of memberships group to share ideas.
Corporate Friends: Anne Box said that Corporate Friends authorized name badges for volunteers if anyone is interested.
At the Corporate meeting, a request was made for an interim president for University Heights Friends after three officers resigned.
Free California State Parks passes can be requested at the library branches. Chuck added that they can be checked out for a specific period of time, and there are a small number available per location.
Roundtable: We will provide holiday treats for the branch staff as usual. Elaine Kalin said that she and Mary Rose Mueller will take care of purchases. We decided that we will not meet to have a Friends holiday event. There will not be a meeting in December.
The meeting was adjourned at 10:55 A.M. The next meeting will be on Saturday, January 28 at 10:00 A.M. in the branch. The exact location in the branch is not scheduled yet.
