Friends of the Mission Hills/Hillcrest Knox Library

The meeting was held in conference rooms at the Mission Hills/Hillcrest Harley and Bessie Knox Library. The meeting was called to order at 10:05 A.M. by Anne Box, President. An attendance list is at the end of the minutes.
Minutes: The minutes of the March 25, 2023 meeting were approved as submitted.
Financials: Don Rudesill was attending the Corporate Friends meeting. Anne presented the March report. Bookstore cash sales were $1,189.28. Square credit card sales were $537.66. Amazon sales were $676.86 and Abe sales were $351.91. Book cart sales and donations totaled $49.14. Total bookstore sales were $2,803.85.
Expenses for the month included bookstore supplies and postage for a total of $426.73. Program expenses totaled $968.20. Two library chairs were repaired for a total of $100.00.
Our total in all accounts is $165,131.90. This includes a 14 month CD in the amount of $20,002.34.
Anne said that she requested information from Corporate on our loan to the Central Library shop in 2013. She has not had a response to date. She asked Don to bring it up at today’s Corporate meeting.
Librarian’s report: Steve Wheeler said that the Blackout Poetry event was successful. The three winners will be announced and rewarded and will read their poems on Saturday, April 29.
Poet Laureate Jason Perez presented a program and wrote a poem during the program.
April 29 is Poem in Your Pocket Day. Poems will be available at the branch.

Saturday, May 6 and Saturday, May 13, 2:30 P.M. both days, vegetable garden classes.
Saturday, May 20, 2:30 P.M. John D. Spreckels and the Making of San Diego.
Steve said that expenses were as usual with the addition of crayons and glue for crafts.
Steve provided Special Fund balances. Materials has $7,761.55, Equipment and Supplies has $8,720.20, Performers and Contracts has $7,301.71 and the unmatched Trust Fund has $10,466.93.
Steve requested $200.00 for the seed library, $275.00 for Dia de los Ninos, Comics Day and Mother’s Day, and $200.00 for a future Richard Lederer presentation with a musician partner. Mr. Lederer will be paid through Oasis, the $200.00 is for payment to the partner. We approved a total of $675.00. Nancy Carol Carter suggested contacting San Diego Seed Company for seed donations.
Bookstore: We will have a lunch on June 10 at noon for the volunteers of the bookstore and the volunteers in the library. The event will be in the meeting room. Elaine Kalin and Mary Rose Mueller will organize the event. Contact them if you would like to help.
Jean Stein said that we are getting volunteers, and many shifts now have two workers which helps if someone has a last minute emergency.
Steve said that volunteer Chuck Leib was awarded a Presidential Award for volunteering in the library. Chuck is also our membership officer.
Kim McDaniel said we have a lot to list on Amazon. We have had many suitable donations.
Elaine Kalin said she is going to write an article for the local papers about the Summer Reading Program and will place an ad that lists the June programs. She said that she may also advertise in the July and August issues. Kim suggested adding our bookstore hours.
Website: Al Hoefer said that everything is current.
Membership: Chuck Leib said that we have had a few renewals and one new membership. He said that there is a membership group asking for an update on total members. He will respond. Anne said that she responded to Corporate Friends for their request for our membership information.
Corporate Update: Anne reminded us that The 2023 Serving with a Purpose Conference will be in Ontario, CA on May 23 for anyone interested in attending.
The meeting was adjourned at 10:45 A.M. The next meeting date was not set but will probably be Saturday, May 20 at 10:00 A.M.
