Friends of the Mission Hills/Hillcrest Knox Library

The meeting was held in conference rooms at the Mission Hills/Hillcrest Harley and Bessie Knox Library. The meeting was called to order at 10:00 A.M. by Pat Littell, Secretary, in the absence of Anne Box, President. An attendance list is at the end of the minutes.
Minutes: The minutes of the February 25, 2023 meeting were approved as submitted.
Financials: Don Rudesill presented the February 1 28, 2023 financial results. Bookstore cash sales were $854.00. Square credit card sales were $569.49. Amazon sales were $1,093.80 and ABE book sales were $159.68. Book cart sales and donations totaled $31.00. We also had one new family membership of $20.00 and the donation box had $100.00.
Expenses for the month included $120.00 for Amazon supplies and $50.00 for ABE postage. We also paid for a Mission Hills banner featuring a staff member for $125.00. Look for it soon! Expenses for programs and events brought the total expenses to $1,044.44.
The total in all accounts was $163,816.25 at the end of February.
Pat Littell suggested that we put some of our available funds into CDs now that interest rates have increased. Don said that he and Ruth Rudesill will take care of it. We approved the motion to make the investment.
Librarian’s report: Steve Wheeler provided Special Fund balances as of March 1, 2023. The Materials Fund has $7,761.55, Equipment and Supplies $8,720.20, Performers/Contracts $7,301.71. The unmatched Trust Fund has a balance of $10,466.93.
Purchases for the month included plywood for the laser cutter of $112.05, wheels for library carts $203.18 and the weekly expense for baby signing story time of $150.00.
Programs: Upcoming programs include several for Poetry Month in April:
April 3, Monday, at 6:30 P.M. Jason Perez, San Diego’s new Poet Laureate. We approved purchase of two of his books for the branch and an honorarium of $100.00.
April 10-14 Blackout Poetry all week. The winner will receive a $50.00 gift card from the Central Library Bookstore. Jean Stein is spearheading this event. Contact her to volunteer to help.
April 29, Saturday, at 2:30 P.M. Curran Jeffrey will host an open poetry reading.
April 29 is also Poem in Your Pocket Day.

Today’s event is Little Fish Comic Book Studio, a workshop.
March 27, 6:00 P.M. Alexander Hamilton, the Man Not the Musical.
March 28, noon, Concert. This will be a flute duo.
April 1, Saturday, T Rex tea party for children.
April 14, Friday, AARP tax prep in the Community Room.
April 15, Saturday, 2:30 P.M. talk on Joan of Arc
April 24, Monday, talk by a Midway (the ship) volunteer.
We authorized $150.00 for an Easter Egg Hunt for children.
Bookstore: Jean Said that we have only one shift not covered on a permanent basis. Most shifts now have two volunteers.
Susan Chenven reported that we have 100 books listed on ABE and over 700 on Amazon. She said that ABE is more flexible to use for things such as listing books as first editions.
Susan received an email requesting recertification for Amazon. After the meeting today, Holly Merten will take care of this.
Pat Littell suggested a small cart with children’s books to put in the Community Room during their programs and events. We have many more books than we can shelve in the bookstore. We agreed to try this. We will post signs on the cart showing that the books are for sale and where to pay for them.
Steve reminded us that June will begin the Summer Reading Program. Don suggested that we promote it in the two local papers with an article and an advertisement. Mary Rose Mueller said that she can write the article.
Website: Al Hoefer said that the site is up to date and programs and events are posted.
Membership: No report. Chuck Leib was not in attendance.
Corporate Friends: Anne Box was not at the meeting to report on Corporate, but the agenda attached information on a book sale Saturday, April 15 from 9A.M. to 3P.M. and Sunday April 16 from noon to 3P.M. The entire sales area at Corporate will be open.
Roundtable: Jean suggested that we have a get together soon. We have several new volunteers, and it would be nice to have everyone together. Steve will check availability of the Community Room on a Saturday. Mary Rose suggested a time of 11A.M. to 1P.M.
Pat asked if we need to have a half price sale in any areas. Cookbooks were suggested, so in April, cookbooks will be two for one. Pat will ask Sue Eubanks to make a sign.
The meeting was adjourned at 10:42. A.M. The next meeting will be Saturday, April 22, 2023 at 10 A.M. as usual.
