Children / Young Adults

Major Goals for the Function or Area

      • Fun and inviting
      • Indoor/outdoor space
      • Display areas
      • Kids art, murals
      • Young adults and children’s – separate spaces with separate patios
      • Much more interaction with local schools

Critical Needs (must have):

      • Separate spaces for children and young adults (acoustically designed)
      • Soundproof rooms for group study, activities, tutoring, etc.
      • Young adults – computer rooms necessary with visibility
      • Young adults – DVDs and videos important, audio tapes, software games and educational

Less-Critical (would like to have):

      • Outdoor space – play structure?
      • Storytelling spot with built-in steps for seating, possibly outdoors – BIG space (maybe even with a small stage)
      • Big comfy chairs (not fabric that gets easily dirty, harbors germs, etc.)
      • Fun Design!
      • Listening stations for audio, tapes, DVDs
      • Cultural introductions through foreign language books
      • Reference desks in children’s area
      • Restrooms in children’s area would be great, with some smaller toilets and changing tables and small lounge area for breastfeeding (security reasons)
      • Fun curvy tables (shaped like peanuts?)
      • Ceiling has to be fun!
      • Larger selection of young adult books

Design Considerations:

      • Colorful, fun, lots of light
      • Underground parking?? Bike and stroller parking
      • Outdoor space needs to be warm and inviting w/ lots of green, trees, etc. maybe swings from the trees, outdoor art in the trees?
      • Theme of the library – Nature? Outdoor space? Green and Urban?
      • Entryway to be more of an “arched tunnel” to the children’s area “Wonderland”
      • Sponsored mosaic tiles? Etc.
      • Wish list/suggestion boxes
      • Café on site
      • Snacks available
      • Picnic tables outside for reading, studying, eating
      • Donation space for children to bring old toys and books
      • Puppets, giant stuffed animals
      • Arts and crafts programs/separate rooms
        • Puppets
        • Movie nights
        • Author presentations/book signings
        • Classes? Foreign languages?
