Libraries in San Diego and across the nation are more popular and relevant than ever with use among children, teens, and families on the rise. The new Mission Hills-Hillcrest/Harley & Bessie Knox Branch Library is part of a San Diego Library renaissance and a revitalization in the Uptown area. The current facility served Mission Hills for 56 years, but community needs have outgrown the Library. In the heart of Uptown and adjacent to Florence Elementary School, the new construction creates a spacious new venue that will broaden access to invaluable free resources for new readers, K-12 students and the business community.
The new library will feature:
New children and teen areas.
An IDEA Lab with 3D printing, maker space equipment and the latest technology.
Four study rooms.
A garden.
Computer labs for children and adults.
A large, adaptable community room.
A special work area for the Friends of the Library.
The Mission Hills-Hillcrest/Knox Branch Library will be a community gathering place where neighbors come together to link to information, ideas, and each other. The new Library is nearly four times larger than the current Library and will generate similar multiples in circulation and attendance.
The Library will be a safe, welcoming space for the diverse community and will provide equal and free access to information, resources and support for new immigrants, people with disabilities and patrons identifying themselves as members of the LGBTIQ community.
The Campaign for Excellence is a San Diego Public Library Foundation and Friends of the Mission Hills-Hillcrest Library partnership to ensure excellent programs, advanced technology, and robust collections to serve community needs.
