2019 January

26 jan: Book Pass!

Come join us on January 26, 2019 to celebrate the grand opening of the new Mission Hills-Hillcrest/Knox Library and take part in one of the biggest “Book Passes” on record.

We will line streets from the current library to the new location to pass along select books as part of a grand opening party.  Each book passer will receive a free scarf and other promotional items to commemorate this historic day.

Here is the itinerary for the day of the event:

8:00am – 9:00 am: Registration will take place at our new Branch, 215 West Washington St.  Coffee, water and muffins will be available while supplies last.  Be sure to arrive with your group, as you will be assigned a location on the Book Pass line based on the time of arrival.

9:00am – 10:00am: Books will be passed from the old Mission Hills Library (925 W. Washington Street) to the new Mission Hills-Hillcrest/ Knox Library (215 W Washington St.).  With an online poll, the community selected The Hobbit as the final book to be passed.  Participants will be invited to follow it as it is passed to the new Library for the ribbon-cutting ceremony.

10:00am: San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer will join other civic leaders to cut the ribbon and open the Mission Hills-Hillcrest/Harley & Bessie Knox Library.

11:00am-3:00: Live music, crafts and activities for all to enjoy will be held at the new branch.

Dressing up as a character from your favorite book is encouraged.  We want to share your spirit, so use the hashtag #BookBrigade on January 26 to be featured on our Facebook page!

As a book passer, you will take part in one of the biggest book passes on record and will receive a free scarf (while supplies last) and other promotional items to commemorate this historic day.  We are expecting a large amount of people to attend; therefore, we kindly ask for your patience and respect to our San Diego community.

The event will be held rain or shine, so we ask that you please dress accordingly.  This event also requires standing for a long period of time.  If you are registered and anticipate trouble standing, feel free to bring a folding chair or beach chair.

Parking will not be available at the new library, so please plan to walk, use ride share or public transportation if possible.  Limited parking will be available first come, first served at Florence Elementary.
