Hi,

Please see the attached calendar of free November events at the Mission Hills-Hillcrest/Knox Branch Library. We’ll have our usual storytimes, book clubs, LEGO, Dance Pants Bash!, and Tinker Tuesdays. Here are some of the special events:

Adults

      • Monday, November 6, noon to 3:00 PM: The Sharp Neurocognitive Research Center is offering free memory screenings on the first Monday of each month. Registration with library staff is required.
      • Friday, November 17, 3:30 PM: Watch the movie October Sky, based on the true story of Homer Hickam, a coalminer’s son who was inspired by Sputnik to build model rockets and eventually became a NASA engineer.
      • Saturday, November 18, 2:30 PM: Local historian and retired Navy officer Rudy Shapee will present A Pilgrim Odyssey: From Holland to a New World. He will follow the Pilgrims from their refuge in Leiden, Holland to their final settling of Plymouth Plantation in the New World. He’ll also discuss what life was like for the Pilgrims at sea and the challenges they endured.
      • Saturday, November 18, 4:00 PM: Local author Diane Nares will discuss her new memoir, His Place at the Table: A Personal, Public, and Spiritual Love Story, a powerful tribute to her late son and an inspiring journey that included the founding of the Emilio Nares Foundation.
      • Saturday, November 25, 2:30 PM: From Olmecs to Aztecs: 1800 BCE-1325 CE. Maria Butler, MA, Lecturer Emerita SDSU, presents a brief overview of the peopling of ancient civilizations that inhabited Mesoamerica and their cultural contributions.
      • Tuesday, November 28, noon: Enjoy a concert by a faculty member of Villia Musica, a local music education nonprofit organization.

Kids

      • Tuesday, November 1, 10:00 AM: Special Empathy in Nature Storytime and Craft for preschoolers.
      • Tuesday, November 1, 3:00 PM: Dia de los Muertos Craft. Sign up on our online calendar or with library staff.
      • Friday, November 3, 3:30 PM: Watch the Disney Pixar animated film Coco, which was inspired by Dia de los Muertos.
      • Saturday, November 11, 4:30 PM: Kids are invited to paint a pet rock. Sign up on our online calendar or with library staff.

Branch News

–   A Century of the Mission Hills Library

It’s hard to miss the beautiful building at the corner of Washington and Front Streets that houses the Mission Hills – Hillcrest/Knox Branch Library. But the origin of a Mission Hills community library started in one room of the Ulysses S. Grant Elementary School in 1921. Later moves relocated the branch library, eventually to the building at Washington and Hawk Streets.
