Thank you for your interest in events at the Mission Hills-Hillcrest/Knox Branch Library! I hope you will be able to attend one or more of our programs in September:

ADULTS

Friday, 9/1, 3:30 PM: Watch the movie Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Popcorn will be provided.

Saturday, 9/9, 2:30 PM: Dances with Words. Richard Lederer and Bill Shipper present a musical and comedic celebration of the English language. Dr. Lederer is the language columnist for the San Diego Union-Tribune and the author of over 60 books.

Monday, 9/11, 6:00 PM: Gay Men’s Book Club. Discuss the book The Town of Babylon.

Monday, 9/11, 6:30 PM: Legacies of the Past: San Diego History. Linda Canada from San Diego Oasis has drawn upon local archives and private photograph collections to create a program that she hopes will surprise you, and maybe even astound you!

Monday, 9/18, 1:00 PM: Brushstrokes & Bookworms: A Community Book Club for Art-Loving Readers. At this second meeting of a new book club, discuss The Art Forger. Contact Elsie Arredondo to register (858-454-1231 or admin@enaartgroup.com).

Saturday, 9/23, 2:30 PM: Frida Kahlo’s Art. Gwenyth Mapes (Professor of Humanities at Grossmont College) will discuss Kahlo’s life and art in this illustrated presentation from San Diego Oasis.

Tuesday, 9/26, noon: Concert. One or more faculty members from the music education organization Villa Musica will perform.

Wednesday, 9/27, 3:00 PM. Mystery Book Club. Discuss the mystery novel Mycroft Holmes.

 Friday, 9/29, 3:30 PM. Watch the movie Bullet Train. Popcorn will be provided.

ALL AGES

Every Tuesday, 5:00-7:00 PM: Tinker Tuesdays. Kids and adults can have fun with technology, including 3D printers, a laser cutter, and a die cutting machine.

Every Thursday, 3:30-5:00 PM: Board Game Afternoon. Kids and adults can play chess and many other games. On 9/28, there will be a special program: play Lotería in celebration of Nuestra Cultura Month.

Friday, 9/15, 3:30 PM: Watch the movie Finding Nemo. Popcorn will be provided.

Saturday, 9/16, 2:00 PM: Do-It-Yourself Terra-Cotta Herb Garden. Join us and local artists Toshwerks for a fun, hands-on DIY crafty project for ages 8 through adult. Saturday, 9/16, 11:00 AM: Kids! San Diego Poetry Workshop. Kids ages 6 to 12 will be guided in writing their own poem. Sign up at https://sandiego.librarymarket.com/event/kids-san-diego-poetry-workshop or with library staff.

Saturday, 9/30, 2:30 PM: Emergency Preparedness for Kids. Kids and their families learn how to prepare for disasters, such as wildfires, power outages, and extreme heat, while coloring a puzzle and making a memory game

Weekly

Every Saturday, 10:00 AM: Dance Pants Bash! Kids and families can dance along to the music.

Every Monday, 3:30-5:00 PM: LEGO Time. Kids can get creative with LEGO.

Every Wednesday, 10:00 AM: Preschool Storytime. Kids up to age 5 can listen to stories, sing along to songs, and complete a simple craft.

Every Thursday, 10:00 AM: Baby Sign Storytime with Monta Briant.  Parents and babies learn how to use ASL signs for early communication through stories, songs, and other fun activities.

Branch News

–   A Century of the Mission Hills Library

It’s hard to miss the beautiful building at the corner of Washington and Front Streets that houses the Mission Hills – Hillcrest/Knox Branch Library. But the origin of a Mission Hills community library started in one room of the Ulysses S. Grant Elementary School in 1921. Later moves relocated the branch library, eventually to the building at Washington and Hawk Streets.
